This commission was especially interesting and fun for me to work on. I'm a fan of Francoise Gamma's work, and we have collaborated in the past, so it was a great pleasure to attempt a forgery of his work. After doing a bit of research and taking the animation this far, I decided not to continue. I think its on the edge of a convincing gamma artwork, but the nuances and subtle missing style creates a tension and I think highlights what makes Francoise Gamma's work so interesting.

What a busy year so much has happened! I hope this year has treated you well, and I hope next year brings more good things your way!

Now that the year is reaching its end I wanted to say "Hello !" and also share with you some things that I have been up to over the past 12 months.

starting with the future and working backward

My artwork Wave was just featured in an exhibition titled "you only live twice" was held at the Kunsthalle New in Chicago

I recently went to Miami for the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami and created a new artwork for the exhibit LikeArtBasel , a brief recap of the show is available on the American Institute of Graphic Arts Blog Design Envy as well as Art-Agenda. The exhibit was featured on the "to do" list for The New York Times , Art Fag City and Art-info.com.

While in Miami I also participated in BYOB Miami , one of several Bring Your Own Beamer exhibitions I have participated in over the last year including BYOB Denver which I helped organize and BYOB Amsterdam while in Europe over the summer. Also while in Berlin over the summer I curated and organized an art exhibit in an internet cafe called "Becoming Not Being" .

I started a Masters program of Fine Art & Digital Media in September at the University of California at Santa Barbara which has me working closely with the Media Arts & Technology department.

My blog Greek New Media Shit , as well as two other artworks, The Dynamics of Non-Being and Perpetual Threshold , have been accepted into the Rhizome ArtBase, an affiliate of the New Museum in New York. This curated archive of new media art is the most comprehensive database of such works and I am proud to have been involved.

Greek New Media Shit has also been the subject of an essay written by Brian Droitcour on Rhizome.org .

In April I was accepted into the Computers Club Drawing Society, you can see the drawings I've done on my CCDS profile. Also, my involvement in CCDS was mentioned in an interesting article on Artinfo that I would suggest checking out.

Early in 2011 I was included in the Post Internet Survival Guide a fantastic publication initiated by Katja Novitskova and published by Revolver Publishing

I was also interviewed by 303 Magazine early in 2011, you can read the interview here if you missed it.

In total I was involved in 17 exhibitions in 2011 across 11 cities in 3 countries, you can find a full list near the bottom of this page with links to documentation of them.

The Internet user as cyberneticmagician

Thepower of the individual to cause rapid change and transformation within societyhas never been greater. The tools of authorship, audience and immediatefeedback that the Internet provides has allowed for cultural shift atincredible rates. This is especially true regard to memetic subcultures inwhich audience and authors are more often one in the same. We have reached agolden age of cultural shift in which the tools of creation and communicationhave never been more accessible to so many individuals. Soon every human onearth can act as shamans of culture in this blistering communications feedbackloop as the number of devices connectedto IP networks will be twice as high as the global population in 2015. ( Cisco Vni ).

EveryInternet user is a shaman, an author actively shaping their own reality andacting as "priests of the eternal imagination" ready to "transmutethe daily bread of experience into the radiant body of everlasting life" (Joyce). This notion ofthe 'eternal imagination' could be described as the metaphysical andtechnological phenomena of our collective consciousness. Every action oneperforms within the Internet rapidly dissolves and forms interference patternsand turbulence through fields of culture and consciousness, changing both theentire system and the user of the system in a feedback loop. The speed anddensity of this communications feedback loop will soon approach theunimaginable and transform human consciousness in wildly unpredictable ways.Brain computer interfaces and global bandwidth limits will become greatlysophisticated due to the accelerating returns of our technological culture anddissolve the boundaries between our individual consciousnesses. This is asystem based on interdependence, co-authorship, and is structurally modular,nodal and analogous to spiritual notions of oneness and interconnection.

Philosophicaland spiritual practitioners across time and cultures have understood theflexible and interconnected nature of reality as it relates to our perceptionand the power of such understanding. The Buddhist concept of emptiness orSunyata describes that "Everything is inter-related and mutually dependent— never wholly self-sufficient orindependent. All things are in a state of constant flux where energy andinformation are forever flowing throughout the natural world giving rise to andthemselves undergoing major transformations with the passage of time." This rhizomatic model of perception dissolves an objectivereality much in the way that the Internet has dissolved top-down models ofauthorship and authority across nearly every media, and has manifested the useras a magician & master of ones reality.

Butwhat do I mean by ‘magician’ As Aleister Crowley states, “What is a Magical Operation? It may be defined asany event in nature, which is brought to pass by Will." And by that very definition Internet users are most certainlypractitioners of magic with each interaction, each 'like', each 'share' amanifestation of the will of a user, an extension and expression ofconsciousness. There is a great power in that knowledge of oneself as apractitioner of magic, it enables one to act with intent and purpose, tomanifest ones consciousness and thus transform ones own perception, therebytransforming all of reality. Cybernetic theory surprisingly offers a connectionbetween these systems of magic beliefs and the manifestation of will, spiritualnotions of interconnectedness and the Internet.

As Edward Shankendescribes:

1)phenomenaare fundamentally contingent

2)the behavior of a system can be determined

3)with regard to the transfer of information, animals and machines function inquite similar ways, so a unified theory of this process can be articulated;

4)by regulating the transfer of information, the behavior of humans and machinescan be automated and controlled. "

This cyberneticstrategy suggests to be aware of the ways in which action and control can causechange within systems, enter into a feedback loop with ones subject of inquiryand enact rapid transformation within the system and within oneself.Understanding ones participation in culture and the Internet as a magical actand with a cybernetic model of thought has a history as well aligning itselfwith shamanistic practices across "...several generations of nineteenth and twentiethcentury artists [that have] affirmed the power of the world to call forth anotherwise inaccessible reality and the ability of art to give shape andsignificance to the chaos of the universe.” (Bynum)

I proposeas Humans, Internet users, shamans of culture and cybernetic magicians, we useour tools for rapid transformation in an altruistic and humanistic way. Tooccupy island Earth together and play Buckminster Fullers ‘World Game’ in whichthe goal is to “Make the world work, for 100% of humanity, in the shortestpossible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense orthe disadvantage of anyone.”

A Speed Show is an exhibition format developed by Aram Bartholl.

The basic idea of this exhibition format is to create a gallery like opening situation for browser based internet art in a public cyber-cafe / internet-shop for one night. The exhibition format is free and can be applied by anyone at any place.

"Becoming, Not Being" is in reference to flux, change, turbulence, evolution, emergent phenomena, consciousness and the Internet. It's a way of thinking of 'non-selfhood' and an openness to change and flexible notions of self and other. It is a model of thought in which travel and movement, rather than destination and place, become areas of investigation. The world is in constant flux, which creates infinite opportunities for discovery and rebirth. There is no empirical objective structured reality in which we live, but rather fluctuating interference patterns and fractal levels of consciousness and thought which are constantly forming and dissolving like flocks of birds. These spiritual notions of impermanence, non-selfhood and interconnectedness are analogous to the structure of the Internet and the ways in which it has transformed, and will continue to transform human consciousness. I have asked participating artists in "Becoming, Not Being" to consider the title of the show and interpret it freely as they see fit. - Sterling Crispin

Global Empathy VIA Computer-Brain Interfaces

Emerging brain-computer interface technologies are expanding the range of human expression, consciousness and human potential. I seek to dissolve notions of the self, attachment to the self, and increase empathy between people in order to reduce human suffering. My project involves a globally connected network of participants wearing EEG brain-computer interfaces. By displaying the average of thousands of live readings back to the participants their minds will slowly become closer to the average, effectively entering into an empathetic resonance feedback loop.

Through this I hope to enact a computer aided global awakening of empathy and compassion between people of the world.

Electroencephalography is defined as the recording of electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons within the brain. Rather than measuring the subtly of individual neurons firing EEG systems rely on the emergent pulses of millions of neurons which all fire simultaneously in wave patterns. Amplitude, phase, frequency and coherence of these signals as well as rhythmic neuronal oscillations of the Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gama and Mu brainwaves are all measured with great accuracy.

Several consumer grade EEG scanners are now available on the market. The price point will eventually reach a level where most households have EEG devices in them and they will become as ubiquitous as the cellphone. Infact cellphones are a likely candidate for the eventual global distribution of this technology.,

A small scale experiment may be conducted with 5-10 EEG devices.

The fourth annual Art Rocks to be held on Thursday, May 12th 2011 at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. The mission of Art Rocks is to raise money and awareness for the pediatric diabetes programs at the Berrie Center. Our hope is that this event will encourage the next generation of philanthropists, especially donors to the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center.

We are pleased to announce the Denver instance of the international exhibition series Bring Your Own Beamer. The premise of BYOB is to ask local media based artists to bring their own projectors to a physical location in order to showcase recent work. BYOB has already taken place in over a dozen cities worldwide, involving artists of an extended and dispersed networked community.

Originally conceived by Berlin-based artist Rafael Rozendaal, BYOB Devner (organized by Sterling Crispin, Nicholas O’Brien, and Mario Zoots) will bring together 20+ Denver-based artists to create a collaborative happening of moving light and sound. Various interpretations of the initial idea of BYOB have spawned several different approaches that include ad hoc installations, performances, and other immersive environments of DIY spontaneity and experimentation.

BYOB Denver will be hosted by RedLine, a non-profit gallery located at 2350 Arapahoe Street on May 17th starting at 7pm.

i've begun hosting a critique session open to the public focused around new media or "post media" artworks

Post-media aesthetics needs categories that can describe how a cultural object organizes data and structures user’s experience of this data.

The traditional concept of a medium emphasizes the physical properties of a particular material and its representational capacities (i.e., the relationship between the sign and the referent.) As traditional aesthetics in general, this concept encourages us to think about the author’ s intentions, the content and the form of an artwork -- rather than the user. In contrast, thinking of culture, media and individual cultural works as software allows us to focus on the operations (called in actual software applications “ commands” ) that are available to the user. The emphasis shifts on user’s capabilities and user’ s behavior. Rather than using the concept of medium we may use the concept of software to talk about past media, i.e., to ask about what kind of user’s information operations a particular medium allows for. - http://goo.gl/oWH0K

Another way to think about postmedia is the difference between UI and UX design, ie User Interface VS User Interaction

Postmedia is concerned with user interaction, what the art does, how it does it, why it does it, more traditional notions of art making are generally focused around user interface ie: the material reality of the object without much interest in human interaction with said object
